The first scenes relate the doings of a scapegrace son, his flight from his native place, and an old mothers nightly vigil for his return. Tom, entangled with a dancer, kills her in drunken rage. Meanwhile, the old lady has been warned against an escaped criminal. The son arrives home just as the thief has entered. A faltering shot from a revolver left for her protection, and the struggle in the next room suddenly ends. The daughters fiancé calms the mothers fears, and she retires to her chamber, little knowing the truth, to pray once more for the return of the prodigal.
